Management Meeting

Here is the Management Recap Meeting for August 25th.

Hurricane We have a category 2 hurricane arriving this weekend. It is HIGHLY recommended that everyone puts their trash cans away, patio furniture, grills, flags, windchimes.....basically anything that isn't nailed down outside. The pool furniture will be secured on Friday. If you wish to use the pool prior to the storm please do not use the furniture. Also, we are letting the pool level drop a bit because of all the rain we do not want it to over flow. You can follow the storm on your radio, tv or try this site www.liveweatherblogs.com

Southern Meadow is Recycling! Everyone has received the blue recycling container with the gray lid. Along with a sheet that tells you what can and can not go into the container. Recycling will begin on or about September 12th. Allied Waste Services will be sending everyone a letter stating the date. Look for it on the monthly calendar!

Good'N Plenty due to the cost the trip has been cancelled. On November 2 there will be a trip to Shady Maple! Sign up in the clubhouse!

I Love Book Club

Southern Meadow Book Club met today to discuss last month's book choice, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The majority of people felt that the book was difficult to read, intended for a younger audience, in a different time. So overall disappointment was expressed about this choice. However, some interesting points WERE brought up! We discussed the "slang" used in the book in that time in the South, the painting of the fence was a classic move that Tom made getting others to do it! We also pondered exactly how old is Tom Sawyer? Was he a kid of around 8 or was he a teenager? He did lose his tooth but was it because he was young or because of lack of dental care? What happened to his mother? How did he and his cousin Sid come to live with their Aunt Polly? How did Aunt Polly provide for everyone? These are questions that will never have an answer.

Next month's Southern Meadow Book Club choice is Sarah's Key by Tatiana d Rosnay. In the summer of 1942, the French police arrested thousands of Jewish families and held them outside of Paris before shipping them off to Auschwitz. On the 60th anniversary of the roundups, an expatriate American journalist covering the atrocities discovers a personal connection—her apartment was formerly occupied by one such family. She resolves to find out what happened to Sarah, the 10-year-old daughter, who was the only family member to survive. The story is heart-wrenching, and Polly Stone gives an excellent performance, keeping a low-key tone through descriptions of horror that would elicit excessive dramatics from a less talented performer. Her characters are easy to differentiate, and her French accent is convincing. De Rosnay's novel is captivating, and the powerful narration gives it even greater impact. A St. Martin's hardcover.

Resident Spotlight The Kochs

In this month's Southern Meadow Resident Spotlight are.....Janet and Larry Koch!

Both were born in NY and moved to Queens in their early childhood. Despite attending the same high school they did not meet until Janet's graduation party (Larry is 2 years older). They started dating while in college. Larry atteneded SUNY majoring in Education and Janet attended City University of NY majoring in Biological Sciences. After dating 2-3 years Janet and Larry were married and honeymooned in the beautiful Bahamas.

Janet's career in biological sciences gave her exposure to various hospitals as Larry further enhanced his career in the school systems. They welcomed their son Andrew into the world in 1986. They've lived in NY, Maine(twice), and New Jersey, approaching retirement they researched Southern Meadow to be the best place to live.

Both are actively involved in the Delaware Community. Whether participating at the Synagogue or heading down town to support the Arts and Theater on the Breen. Larry continues to help others working part time in the school system as a teacher. He enjoys perfecting his comedic skills performing at various Senior Centers. Larry will be at the Dover Modern Maturity Center presenting Lincoln's humor.

Janet has embraced retirement while Larry is easing into it! They believe in enjoying their retirement years, but that life extends beyond yourself and you have to think about all the other things to do in the world and in the community.
