Dinner for 6

The Dinner for 6 was a huge success and I asked for each of the hosts/hostess to tell me about their experience.....so without further adieu...

Barbara P's experience......
For the first "Tables dinner", we as hosts were delighted to have Sibyl and Warren (long time residents) and Sandy and John (new residents). We knew Sibyl and Warren casually from bowling and other functions but never really sat down and talked at length. Sandy and John we had just met when they moved in but again never sat long enough to really talk.

This really gave us all a chance to get to know each other in a small intimate setting with no interruptions. You might say that all of us certainly have the "gift of gab". We talked and laughed through almost two hours!

The fun also extended for dessert at the clubhouse. There all the groups met up for coffee and dessert; I think we didn't leave untill 8:30PM!

Can't wait for the next "Tables" dinner.

Larry K's experience....
The first progressive dinner results are in, and the night was a great success in so many ways. . Whether you are a guest (bringing in a side dish) or a host (supplying a main course), all appeared to have a good time. The food was delicious, and the company was great. It was an especially nice way for new residents to meet people, and for long-time residents to renew and enrich their acquaintances. Large parties serve their purposes, but take far more organization and work. Often you can’t hear the people next to you, and overriding egos, cliques and feuds, which I guess are also part of the human condition, make them a less effective way for neighbors to meet. This is also especially a great vehicle for singletons and shy people to enjoy meeting neighbors, and have a cheap night out. Our thanks to Christine, for having the persistence and insights to try a new idea and to make it work

Reading PA Airshow!

Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's 22nd Anniversary World War II Weekend - A gathering of Warbirds June 1-3.  A great place to see WWI and WWII vintage airplanes as well as military re-enactors.  There will be over 100 WWII vehicles and thousands of re-enactors.  There are allied camps set up as home front displays, swing dances, USO shows and tons of things to see and do.  The World War II Weekend is a wonderful testimonial to the men and the women who sacrificed it all for freedom!  A few of the Southern Meadow guys was there to see it all!  Here is Mr. Dee's story!

On June 1, 2012 Mr. Dee, Ron, Bill and Bruce had a great time at the "22nd Annual World War II Weekend."  This is a three day event and the theme this year was "A Gathering of War Brides."  Even though with the predicted thunder storms and heavy rain, we went on opening day June 1, 2012.  With my handicap parking ticket we were able to get up close and by 10:30 am we were in!  Now picture this, you enter the front gate.  You were taken back in time, the first thing that you see is a recreation of a Belgium/French Village.  US troops and German Troops in WWII garb.   Then you walk up a hill and when you reach the top you can visit Army, Marine Corp., German, Russian, Polish, Japanese and other WWII military encampments.  Each of the above will tell you their story, answer any questions and demonstrate the gear they had like - guns, uniforms, vehicle and demonstrate their gear.   Head on over to the runway and watch as the planes come in for the show.  Every 15 minutes or so another, then another.  By the end of the day, the Reading Air Field is full of planes and people.  The air show began at 2 pm and what a show that was!  The rain held off until we were leaving at 5 pm.  What a day!

Mr. Dee took so many beautiful pictures that the best way to display them all was in a power point presentation.  Enjoy them I did!

Pot Luck Bowling!!

By Dollie Lampa

May 29th 2012, Southern Meadow Bowlers hit a perfect 300 of fun, friendship and showmanship!  This day lead us to a perfect potluck dinner at the clubhouse.  The yummies were so yummy that everyones tummy hit a strike that ended up with no leftovers to spare!

The dishes were pulled pork, sloppy joes over freshed baked rolls, fried rice, veggie and fruit salads, cole slaw and potato salad to die for!  Homemade desserts were deliciously irresistible.  Thankfully, no one was counting calories.  How can anyone pass up cupcakes with frosting and strawberry topping, chocolate covered truffles, brownies and not to forget chinese donuts sprinkled with pure sugar.

To all the cooks and bakers especially Ginny who organized the party, thank you, job well done!  Fun continued with bathing beauties in the pool and their respective Romeos keeping watch by the pool, just in case someone needed resusitation.  HA! HA! HA!  Dollie, are they talking about you?  Maybe, but Dollie wasn't in the pool!

Party was a lot of fun and looking forward to another potluck like this!

HEY I am not ready!!

Get in Line stop fooling around!

Beautiful picture and a wonderful crowd!

Coffee Talk - Master Gardeners Part II

The speaker for Coffee Talk this month was Wendy and I was very educated on all she had to offer. I learned a lot about planting a container garden. The variety of plants were amazing. Especially the parsley. Who would of thought parsley would actually look good in a container with flowers but it did. It served as a nice green filler.
Drilling a hole in the bottom of the container for drainage

A few of the tips she had were to fill a diaper with water crystals dampen it and put it in the bottom of your container before filling it with soil. It will help keep the moisture in your container. Another one is when you take a plant out of a container and the roots are intertwined and bunched together you should _ _ _ _ _ _ it? (I forgot what she called it). Which is separate them and trim the any long pieces. I always thought that would hurt a plant to disturb the roots but Wendy said it does just the opposite.

Yep a diaper filled with water crystals....who would have thunk that!

She also talked About compost and how the rich soil you get from it is so beneficial to your vegetable and flower garden. You can use a heavy garbage bag, start out with a little soil and keep adding all your kitchen scraps to the bag keep it shut and shake it up once in awhile to mix it before it gets to heavy and after a few months you have a very rich soil. I really enjoyed Wendy's presentation and am looking forward to taking a road trip to see her Gardens at Killens Pond.  Check back to see our visit to the Master Gardener's House and her garden!!

The pot is filled with the rich compost and she is planting away!

The final result!!!   Beautiful! :)
