Southern Meadow Cancer Walk!

Wow, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition Walk at the Dover Downs Monster Mile was a HUGE success!  We had 34 people walking and won an award for the largest group!  We also made the Delaware News Journal!!  Here is the article from the News Journal!

In honor of a breast cancer survivor who works at Southern Meadow, the subdivision's developer is paying the entrance fee for residents who want to walk in 'Monster Miles for a Cause.' Holly Dozois never had a lump, nothing irregular at all when she had a routine mammogram seven years ago. However, the results showed a suspicious spot that turned out to be cancer.
“I was lucky,” she said. After having the cancerous tissue removed and going through a regimen of radiation therapy, she is cancer free.
When the developers of her neighborhood, Southern Meadow in Magnolia, said they would sponsor anyone who wanted to walk in the “Monster Miles for a Cause” to raise money for breast cancer, she quickly signed up.
“Events like this get the word out and get more money for research,” said Dozois, 61, who will walk with about 30 neighbors. She always wears a pink rubber bracelet to remind herself and others of how prevalent breast cancer is. She has several friends who weren’t as lucky as she.
“Breast cancer is one of those things, if you do catch it early it seems you’ll be OK,” said Dozois, who can’t believe there are women who still don’t get mammograms. “You’re talking about your life, a disease that can take away your life.”
“Monster Miles for a Cause” is a fundraising walk on the racetrack at Dover International Speedway – the Monster Mile. It’s an untimed non-competitive walk to benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and hosted by the speedway. Registration is $25, but for walkers from Southern Meadow is being paid by Southern Meadow development company, Investors Realty.
“We have always felt it’s a great cause, but when it affected one of our key employees, it hit a lot closer to home. It has also affected a number of our residents, so we felt this was a great issue for us, as a community, to really get behind,” said Andy Strine, of Investors Realty, developer of Southern Meadow developer, a 55 and older community. The risk for breast cancer increases in women 50-years and older.
Debbie Jackson, Investors Realty sales manager, is the survivor of whom Strine speaks. Diagnosed in May 2009, Jackson is a three-year survivor. She is thrilled about the company sponsoring the walkers.

The Breast Cancer Coalition, the fund recipient, does much to empower the community with information and patient support, said Jackson. Investors Realty not only will pay the entrance fee for resident walkers but also $250 for every resident survivor who walks. The company also will donate $2,000 for each new home buyer who signs a contract in October.
The goal is to raise $5,000.
“I’m bouncing with excitement because this is huge,” said Jackson. She’s especially excited about the survivors like Dozois who are walking. “I am stoked about this because we realize that there is life after breast cancer, and I thank God everyday for life - He gave it to us live, and that’s is what I’m going to do!”
Getting people to sign up has been easy, said Christine Stewart, activities coordinator for Southern Meadow. People are always getting together to do things. Having a rally point like this was a bonus. Everyone knows someone who’s had cancer, she said.
“We all watch out for each other here,” said Dozois.

It's the Great Pumpkins!

Linus: [to Sally as she walks away with everyone else] Hey, aren't you going to wait and greet the Great Pumpkin? Huh? It won't be long now. If the Great Pumpkin comes, I'll still put in a good word for you!
[realizes what he just said]
Linus: Good grief! I said "if"! I meant, "when" he comes!
[calmly]
Linus: I'm doomed. One little slip like that could cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by.
[calling out]
Linus: Oh, Great Pumpkin, where are you?

Come hang with us at the Clubhouse we have a ton of pumpkins and are decked out for fall!!!
We have mums and cornstalks and bales of hay!

We are falling for fall at Southern Meadow!!  Come join us for our Oktoberfest on October 19th and Walk the Monster Mile as we strive for a world without cancer on October 20th!
