What's an Earthworm Worth?

Many of you have probably  heard that having worms in your garden is a good sign. But why exactly is that? The following infographic from Turf Growers explains some of the benefits your garden obtains from having these worms living in the soil.

Some interesting quotes on worms by Charles Darwin and Aristotle
“It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world as these lowly organised creatures” Charles Darwin 1881 Worms break up thatch Thatch is a dense build-up of dead matter that blocks the flow of water and essential nutrients 7 X Extra Phosphate in the Soil with Worms Worms eat Nematodes Nematodes are parasitic creatures that fed on grass roots causing wilting and bare patches. 5 X Extra Nitrogen in the Soil with Worms Worms Help Water Flow Worm tunnels break up the soil and allow a path for water to flow to the grass roots easily 11 X Extra Potassium in the Soil with Worms Worms Feed on Other Pests Worms increase the number of beneficial microbes by lowering the number harmful bacteria and harmful microbes Worms Fertilise the Soil Worms waste (castings) is extremely nutrient rich. Far more so than the soil they consume to produce it. Helpful Hint – Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium are the nutrients represented by the three numbers on fertiliser bags “Without the work of this humble creature, who knows nothing of the benefits he confers upon mankind, agriculture, as we know it, would be very difficult, if not wholly impossible” Charles Darwin 1881

“Worms are the intestines of the earth” Aristotle (a long time ago)

It gives statistical data on some of the cleaning issues that men and women have between them. Finally it explains the benefits of using "green," environmentally safe cleaning products that reduce toxic waste. Overall it's an interesting read and hopefully will help you choose to clean with  green cleaning products! Not only is it much better for the environment, but since you won't be inhaling all of the toxic chemicals it's much better for your health as well!
